A man was arrested Tuesday night for carrying a gun and drugs near a school.
Police said they responded to the Sands Housing Complex on Main Street after hearing a report about a man with a firearm.
They said they found 27-year-old Iran Harris, a convicted felon, walking near the north side of the complex.
They said Harris ran and clutched his waistband when he saw them.
Officers said they pursued him through a nearby SAND Elementary School basketball court where they caught him. However, they noticed that he was no longer grabbing his waistband and did not have the suspected firearm.
Police said they canvassed the area and found a gun along a wooded fence between the complex and the school grounds.
The firearm was a loaded Smith & Wesson .40 caliber pistol with a chambered round, police said. The serial number was destroyed.
In addition to carrying the gun, police said Harris had 11 bags of heroin on him.
He was charged with interfering with police, carrying a pistol without a permit, criminal possession of a firearm, having a weapon on school grounds, possession of a high capacity magazine, having a firearm with an obliterated serial number, third-degree criminal trespass, possession of narcotics, possession with intent to sell and possession with intent to sell near a school.
Investigators said Harris had 33 previous arrests in Hartford.
