It’s the end of an era in West Haven, as Chick’s Drive-In is getting ready to say goodbye.
For 65 years, the establishment has been serving up hot dogs, lobster rolls and fried seafood along the beach.
"The hot dogs were always wonderful,” said Ann Casagrande, who has been eating at Chick’s since it opened.
Hearing that its days were numbered, she and plenty of others had to stop by one last time.
"I have to get my last hot dog here at Chick’s. With the water across the street, it’s a beautiful view,” said Liane Moreland, of West Haven.
Joseph “Chick” Celentano opened up the Beach Street spot back in 1950.
“It’s just a part of West Haven,” Celentano said, adding that the restaurant was his life, and his family grew up next door.
"There's so many stories, you could fill a book,” Celentano said.
While he and his brother would have loved to keep the place going, instead they will honor their dad’s wish.
"It was my father's legacy. It was his baby and he pretty much, when he passed a few months ago, he decided that he wanted the restaurant to close with him,” Celentano said.
While the fried seafood and the famous foot-long hot dogs will soon be gone, so many will still have memories.
"It’s been one of our hangouts for years, and I'm not going to tell you how old I am,” Casagrande said.
"We're going to miss it, we're going to be sad. It’s going to be tough to drive by here, but it’s his wish and I guess it’s an end of an era,” Celentano said.
Chick’s Drive-In will close on Nov. 15.
