WALLINGFORD, CT (WFSB) -

The Liberty Bank and Channel 3 SurPRIZE Squad received a nomination from the coworker of a Wallingford teacher who has been through a rollercoaster of medical procedures.

Kim Hardy’s family said her life took a turn for the worst over the summer.

They described her as a mother, a wife, a friend and a local Spanish teacher. They said she seemed to touch the lives of whoever she met.

“She's really excited about everything and she makes everyone happy and she never gets upset,” said Dylan Smith, one of her former students.

While sitting in her living room this past August, Kim Hardy experienced massive chest pains.

What was initially thought to be a heart issue turned out to be a bad virus, according to her doctors.

During treatment, Kim Hardy ended up having a stroke. Her family said it affected the left side of her body and led to clots in her right leg.

Doctors said they had to amputate.

Despite the life-changing event, Kim Hardy’s positive attitude kept her moving forward.

Her family said they had been preparing for her homecoming.

That’s where the SurPRIZE Squad stepped in with a little gift.

“I think that she's going to love it and be really happy, well, like she always is, and really surprised,” Smith said.

The Squad’s first stop was the Hardy residence.

It startled Ron Hardy, who was working outside on the couple’s home.

He was turning the carport into a more accessible bedroom and bathroom for his wife.

It wasn’t long before the children came running out to see the commotion.

Kyle, the Lake Compounce mascot, accompanied the squad. He had an envelope with four tickets to the Holiday Lights event at Lake Compounce in Bristol.

The squad also gave the Hardys a gift certificate to Home Depot.

Ron Hardy said he was overcome with emotion.

“I'm humbled, this awesome,” he said. “This is really awesome. We need a lot of help so this is good. It's horrible to be in this situation, but the blessings that have come from the community and everything else is overwhelming.”

With her family in tow, the Liberty Bank SurPRIZE Squad headed to Gaylord Hospital, where Kim Hardy is recovering.

“It's such a pleasure and an honor to be nominated for something so special,” Kim Hardy said. “I know that my husband at one point had to say goodbye, had to tell my children that I might not be here tomorrow and here I am today. So I'm going to rejoice in that and make the best of every single day.”
