NEW BRITAIN, CT (WFSB) -

Officials in New Britain announced the name of the city's new baseball franchise on Thursday.

The new team will be known as The New Britain Bees, a nod to the city's industrial background, officials said. A beehive is also on the city's seal.

Runners up included the New Britain Hard Hitters, Hammer and Hornets.

The New Britain Bees is a brand new team. There were rumors that another team would be transplanted and moved New Britain, but that's not the case.

“Our city slogan is "industry fills the hive and enjoys the honey. It plays on our rich industrial history and we want to acknowledge the worker bees of our community,” New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart said.

Stewart, along with principal owner of the Atlantic League club Frank Boulton, former managing partner of the New Britain Rock Cats Bill Dowling and other officials, held a news conference on Thursday morning

“We got to work the next day I found out that the Rock Cats were going to be leaving, but really, they approached the city,” Stewart said.

The city recently completed a public contest to name the team. Fans submitted ideas to the New Britain Herald newspaper, East Side Restaurant or Max Pizza 2.

In addition to revealing the team name, they detailed information about an early bird ticket package offer for fans.

More information on the New Britain Bees team can be found on the team's website here.

A carousel and rock climbing wall will also be a part of an improved New Britain Stadium.

“We have a built in fanbase,” Stewart said. “Those people, who have been our fans have been coming to Rock Cats games for so many years, are still going to come back to see the New Britain Bees because it's a place they know, feel safe in and know they'll have a great family experience.”

Baseball may not be the only thing that will happen at New Britain Stadium. Team officials said they'd love to see it used for dinners, concerts as well as high school and college sports too.

The former New Britain Rock Cats franchise is in the process of moving to Hartford to become the Yard Goats, a move that Hartford officials said was to prevent the team from moving out of state.

The team's first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at New Britain Stadium on April 21.

The fans told Eyewitness News they are all on board.

“I would like to see whose on the team first, get to know them a little bit,” Justin Polverari, of New Britain, said.

“My grandsons come all the time, as much as I can come I would rather do that instead of going to Hartford,” Bill Bonney, of New Britain, said.
