NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

Students were marching and protesting on the Yale University campus in New Haven on Monday afternoon after claims of racism by one fraternity on campus earlier this month.

The students called the march a sign of unity, and it was the result of a fraternity party at Yale University in New Haven where a young woman was allegedly denied entry because of the color of her skin.

Students told Eyewitness News on Monday that tensions continued to run high despite the incident happened last month.

According to reports, the university's president held a forum late last week to discuss what happened. He said he was deeply troubled by the incident.

A woman was allegedly barred from a Halloween party at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and was told "white girls only."

The fraternity issued a statement following the incident.

"White girls only and the sentiment it expresses in no way describes our admission policy for social events," the statement read. "Entry to our home is by no means determined by race."

Dozens of students were marching from the Afro-American Cultural Center across campus around 2 p.m. on Monday.

Students said there's a feeling by some on campus that it may be part of a trend.

"A lot of people here on campus, especially people of color, women of color, feel they're discriminated against or sometimes their voices are not heard," said Abby Johnson, a Yale senior.

"We would like to see an improved climate on campus. Specifically improving diversity in the faculty, uplifting ethnic studies and also have sensitivity training for all Yale students and faculty," said student Katie McCleary.

Yale's president called for the school community to come together and be more respectful and inclusive. He's also looking to promote system change as well.

School leaders said they will implement changes before the Thanksgiving holiday, although the did not specify what they are.
