WALLINGFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Emergency crews closed part of Route 150 in Wallingford after a 74-year-old woman and a dog were hit by a car.

The woman was walking her dog when she was struck. She was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital with serious injuries. Her dog died after being hit.

Route 150, also known as North Turnpike Road, was shut down near Parker Farms Road, however it has been reopened.

Wallingford police said the driver of the vehicle initially fled the scene, however the operator came back and is being questioned by police.

Patrick Pawlik was taking calls for pizza orders at Ameri Pizza when he saw the incident happen right outside his doors.

"It was a loud thump. I heard a loud noise and looked out side and saw the woman and the dog in the middle of the street," he said.

Pawlik then rushed over to check on the woman and her dog.

"I went up to her to look at how she was. She talked to me. She was more concerned about the dog," Pawlik said.

Police have not released the identity of the victim or the driver of the car.
