WALLINGFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A dog is dead and a 73-year-old woman is recovering after they were struck be a vehicle in Wallingford.

It happened along Route 150 while Pauline Eckardt and her dog were walking on Monday, according to police.

Police said the driver initially took off but eventually came back.

"It's unbelievable that someone could do something like that and not stop and see if that person is ok,” said Patrick Pawlik of Wallingford.

Pawlik said he rushed out of Amore Pizza after hearing some kind of commotion.

"I heard a loud noise and looked outside and saw the woman and the dog in the middle of the street,” he said.

Police said Eckardt was walking along North Turnpike Road near Western Sands when the driver struck her.

"I went up to her to look at how she was,” Pawlik said. “She talked to me. She was more concerned about the dog."

Police said the driver has been cooperating with them.

No charges have been filed.
