Many people are going nuts for coconut oil, which is a health trend that has been sweeping the country.
Two doctors both agreed that it can be used as a natural beauty product.
“Coconut oil is great for the skin,” said Naturopathic Physician Dr. Rosanne Demanski.
“I have to say, I have used that before, in my hair,” Dr. Saira Rani, of UConn Family Medicine said.
Coconut oil has also been used by some as a first aid treatment for burns.
Demanski said some of her patients even use it to draw out infections in the sinuses through the process of “oil pulling.”
Oil pulling involves taking a good tablespoon of the coconut oil, and putting it in your mouth, and swishing with it for 10 minutes.
“Your enzymes in your mouth begin to digest that oil, break it down and it will become more of a liquid,” Demanski said. “By the time you're done, it’s going to be almost water-like and also the texture and the coloring of it will have changed.”
There are also claims that coconut oil helps with weight loss.
“I can also see why some people use it because it also requires a lot more energy from your own body to burn, given the amount of fats it has,” Rani said.
But some doctors caution that.
“It also increases your bad cholesterol, which again puts you at risk for heart disease and stroke,” Rani added.
Like anything else, you’re advised to use in moderation.
