HARTFORD, CT (AP) -

A career criminal, who a judge said supplied the gun that killed a Darien police officer in 1981, has been sentenced to more than 13 years behind bars for trafficking crack cocaine.

Anthony Sabato, of West Haven was also sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court to five years of probation.

Prosecutors say the 57-year-old Sabato has 35 convictions since 1975, including state convictions for assault, larceny, burglary and narcotics offenses, and federal convictions for firearms, gambling, and fraud offenses.

They said Sabato also "supplied the firearm that was used in the murder of Darien Police Officer Kenneth Bateman in 1981."

No arrests have ever been made in Bateman's slaying -the only unsolved killing of a Connecticut police officer on record.

Sabato was arrested on the drug charges in March.
