GROTON, CT (WFSB) -

The Liberty Bank Channel 3 Surprize Squad stepped in to help a Connecticut firefighter who was injured in an accident during the holiday season.

The Liberty Bank Channel 3 Surprize Squad went on a call with the Poquonock Bridge Fire Department. But, the Liberty Bank Channel 3 Surprize Squad was not at the fire scene for a news story, but to surprise one of the department’s firefighters.

Fire Captain Jeffrey Douchette has been serving the Poquonock Bridge Fire Department for nearly a quarter of a century.

Last month, while working on his mother-in-law's house, this off-the-clock incident left Douchette severely injured.

“When I went to get off the ladder, my shorts caught the side of the ladder, which pulled the ladder away from the house,” Douchette said. “I fell about 15 feet landing on my left side, which busted my collar bone, 10 ribs, punctured a lung, lacerated my spleen and broke my spine in five spots.”

Douchette has been making a remarkable recovery, despite coming close to losing his life.

“He always puts everybody else ahead of himself,” Poquonock Bridge Fire Chief Joe Winski said. “Of course now it's our turn.”

Winski contacted the Liberty Bank Channel 3 Surprize Squad.

“I watch it often and that's what motivated me to give you folks a call, because it's a tough time for them,” Winski said. “So, he'll be out of work for quite a while.”

But, the Liberty Bank Channel 3 Surprize Squad wanted to help the father of four through the holidays and into the New Year. Winski helped the Liberty Bank Channel 3 Surprize coordinate getting Douchette to the fire house for the big reveal.

Douchette thought the Liberty Bank Channel 3 Surprize Squad was interviewing him for a story.

“There's actually another reason why we're here,” WFSB Anchor Nicole Nalepa said. “Surprise! I'm also here with the the Liberty Bank Channel 3 Surprize Squad and we wanted to do a little something special for you.”

The Liberty Bank Channel 3 Surprize Squad presented Douchette and his wife with a holiday gift basket and several grocery gift cards.

“I don't know what to say,” Douchette said. “I really, really appreciate this.”

“He deserves this,” Winski said. “He puts himself ahead of everyone else.”
