CARY, NC (WFSB) -

A woman who allegedly ignited a social media firestorm over a photo of a dog with a duct-taped snout now faces animal cruelty charges.

Katherine Lemansky, 45, formerly of Avon, was arrested on Monday in North Carolina.

Police said Lemansky, who is known online under the alias Katie Brown, posted a photo of the chocolate lab to Facebook with the caption “this is what happens when you don’t shut up.”

It sparked national outrage and has been shared hundreds of thousands of times.

After an exhaustive search involving agencies in Connecticut and Florida, authorities said they finally tracked Lemansky down in Cary, NC.

People in Connecticut said they were relieved the suspect had been caught.

"It makes me mad upset,” said Felecia Theobald of Meriden. “Why would you have a dog or any type of animal and abuse them like that?”

Investigators said animal control examined the dog in the photo as well as another dog. They said both animals were well-fed and in good health.

"Taping the dog's muzzle was a terrible decision on Ms. Lemansky's part," the Cary Police Dept. said in a statement. "And charging her with animal cruelty was the right thing to do."

Lemansky will face a judge in North Carolina on Dec. 14.
