MIDDLETOWN, CT (WFSB) -

The Liberty Bank Channel 3 SurPRIZE Squad continues to spread some holiday cheer by giving back to a Connecticut woman who is known in the community for her selfless acts, despite her own personal struggles.

Many people know 43-year-old Johanna Tessman, of Middletown, as more than just a wife and a mother. They said she is a fighter.

“She's a very, very strong woman, very inspiring too,” Christopher Tessman, who is Johanna's husband, said.

In 2013, Johanna Tessman was diagnosed with a rare brain condition called intracranial hypertension.

“The spinal fluid doesn't drain properly from your brain; they have medications for it, but I'm allergic to most of them,” Johanna Tessman said. “So, I've had three brain surgeries to try and remedy that.”

Johanna Tessman and her husband are known in their community for their desire to give back to others.

“It's what we're here for,” Johanna Tessman said. “We're not here for ourselves. We're here to make it a better place for everyone else.”

A month before her latest surgery, Johanna Tessman organized an event which raised more than $3,000 for intracranial hypertension research.

“We just tried to find some positive in this, and like our sense of purpose was to help other people,” Johanna Tessman said.

Since the Liberty Bank Channel 3 SurPRIZE Squad happens to be in the giving business, it wanted to give back to Johanna Tessman.

The Liberty Bank Channel 3 SurPRIZE Squad pulled up to the Tessman family home unannounced this week.

“I'm speechless,” said Christopher Tessman laughing.

The Tessman family remained speechless after the squad surprised them with some extra spending money.

“We'll be able to put it towards some bills that we do have because we have a lot of the medical bills,” Johanna Tessman said.

The squad also gave the Tessmans some gift cards, which they can use towards dinner and shopping both as a couple and as a family.

“I know we'll go out to dinner with the kids, because they really like spending time together,” Johanna Tessman said. “And we don't get to go out to dinner much, so that'll be nice.”
