It’s the time of year when most people are out doing Christmas shopping, but with the warmer weather, people are choosing the putting greens instead.

Two weeks before Christmas, and the Pequabuck Golf Club in Terryville would normally be closed, but people were out swinging the fairways on Friday.

"I'm usually sitting in the Pro Shop and just twiddling my thumbs hoping someone come Christmas shopping,” said Kevin Mahaffy, who is the PGA pro at the Pequabuck Golf Club.

An open house is scheduled for Saturday, and Mahaffy said he never thought he’d be able to showcase the actual course for potential members.

“Our course is in great condition right now too, so that helps for all the golfers coming out,” he said, adding that the club is making up for a particularly tough winter. “Especially this year when we started off so late, usually we open in the end of March, but this year we didn't open until the middle of April.”

The conditions on Friday resembled late September, or even October, but Nicole Elliot of Burlington said she had to check it out.

“I don't even have a jacket on. I have my golf bag and it's kind of like a party in December when it's snowy and closed,” Elliot said.

With the weekend looking just as good, Elliot said she’s trying to squeeze in all she can out of the golf season.

“It's amazing, it's the perfect day, we saw the week forecast and we really think about what days we could get in to play golf,” Elliot said.

Pequabuck is open this weekend, and they said if the conditions keep up, people could be golfing on Christmas.
