New Haven firefighter allegedly stole $125,000 from elderly woman (WFSB)
NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -
A New Haven firefighter who is facing larceny charges was expected to appear in court on Tuesday morning, but he was able to make bail.
New Haven firefighter Kenneth Burgos, a 17-year veteran of the fire department, made a living running into burning buildings, but now he is being accused of stealing from a 95-year-old woman.
The victim told police she met Burgos a few years ago after he responded to her house.
She said he then came by and started doing yard work and even going grocery shopping for her, taking her to appointments, and doing her banking.
"I'd see him, sometimes he'd be cleaning the house. We'd say hello or good morning, put the head down and go inside,” said Nxhiko Troqe, who is a neighbor of the victim.
In September, when firefighters showed up to the victim’s home for another call, she told them Burgos was stealing from her.
They called police and the victim said she believed Burgos conned her into signing a will, making him power of attorney.
When police checked her accounts, they said they found more than $125,000 missing.
"This investigation definitely pulled the heart strings of every person in this department. Any time the elderly gets taken advantage of like this, it’s something we do not take lightly,” said New Haven Lt. Otoniel Reyes.
According to police documents, when “asked if Burgos was allowed to write checks from any of her accounts without her consent, and if she ever agreed to him writing checks for $1,000 or more, she said ‘absolutely not’.”
Police allegedly found multiple withdrawals from $400 to $5,000.
Burgos told police the money he took was for her grocery shopping and other chores around the house, but when questioned by police about where all of the money went, Burgos allegedly told police “well I have six kids.”
Burgos was suspended when the allegations first surfaced.
He is expected to appear in court later this month.
