Children in the capital city benefited from a surprise, courtesy of the Channel 3 Liberty Bank SurPRIZE Squad.
On Monday, WFSB meteorologist Scot Haney said he received an email from Mattlyn Rodriguez, who serves as vice-chairperson on the board of the Hartford Housing Authority.
“[It has] an annual Christmas party for [its] children and provide toys,” Haney explained. “This year, their sponsor fell through. That's not good.”
The squad sought to help the group out about a week before its event. The goal was to find toys for the nearly 300 children the group helps in the city each year.
“They can't afford to have Christmas, can't have a Christmas tree,” Rodriguez said. “So, we do what we can, gather them in one room, and even if it's for one day, you know it makes a difference.”
The Liberty Bank SurPRIZE Squad discovered that Rodriguez works from home, so that’s where it showed up with a special delivery.
“Oh my God,” she said. “I can't believe this.”
The squad presented Rodriguez with several bags full of toys.
“I'm looking at all the things and they are things I would've bought because they are educational and no toys that the kid will just junk up and throw away,” she said.
There was also one more gift.
The squad presented her with a gift card so she could purchase anything else the children may need.
Rodriguez said she couldn’t wait to see the looks on the kids’ faces at the authority’s event next Wednesday.
“I think we're going to be okay,” she said. “Thanks to you guys.”
