With the holidays just a few days away, a small Christmas tree delivery service in Putnam is giving back to its community.
Michael McNally came up with the idea to sell and home deliver Christmas trees about a year ago. He worked on a business plan and jumped all in last month
“I wanted to start small in the first year I was thinking a hundred tree would be a good start,” McNally said. I did a lot of marketing in the tri state area to get the fliers out.”
But the business never took off.
McNally admits now he misjudged his market place, $70 for a tree and delivery was too steep for most. After buying a hundred high quality trees in New Hampshire, he’s only sold 30 over the past four weeks.
McNally said he decided to open up the opportunity for a free tree to anyone who hears about the offer.
“He’s my new best friend. This is going to score big points at home too,” Edward Joten, who is the guy who is running the donation drive, said.
The spirit of giving is being payed forward by at least one other person who wants to help make the holiday a happy one.
“So I was going to ask if I could have an extra one to put in my yard with a sign saying free tree so someone else could take it if they didn't have one,” patron Jack Thuotte said.
Business picked up on Monday afternoon with people arriving, anxious to be able to secure one of the real symbols of Christmas without worrying about affordability.
“We are giving that to them and it's something they can cherish. We are giving it to them and we are a part of it, but it's theirs and they can feel emotional about it,” McNally said. “And that's the gift. It’s a personal thing.”
McNally said he is adamant he wants to give this business another shot next season. But he also wants to make sure that a part of the program is the giving away of free trees.
