SOUTHBURY, CT (WFSB) -

A woman shopping in Southbury tried to fake being pregnant to avoid an arrest on Wednesday.

The incident happened at the Kmart, which is located at 100 Main St.in the Southbury Plaza.

That’s where police said found “numerous stolen items” including watches and magic cards in the back of car belonging to 33-year-old Giovanni Torcasio and his fiancée, Denajia Bishop.

Police said the items located were worth about $268.

After police arrested Torcasio, they noticed that Bishop had an active warrant for first-degree larceny.

When police notified Bishop about the warrant, she told investigators she was pregnant and was going into labor.

After an ambulance was called, police learned that Bishop had $91 worth of stolen items underneath her sweatshirt, which made her appear to look pregnant.

Police were able to determine that Bishop was not pregnant and she was arrested. She told investigators that Torcasio told her to hide the items under her sweatshirt because he saw the police come into the store.

Torcasio was charged with sixth-degree larceny. He is being held on a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Waterbury Superior Court on Jan. 5.

Bishop was not charged for the shoplifting.
