The last tree for sale at the Windsor Locks Fire Department has taken on sentimental meaning this year.
The fire department sells trees annual and this had one left this year. Members of the community then took it upon themselves to decorate the remaining tree.
"What they did was they put some decorations of some of their deceased family members and friends and quite a few people, and it started off as a couple of little decorations," lieutenant Joe LaPierre said Thursday.
LaPierre said the department found out through Facebook that many people in the community had a special connection to the tree. Firefighters then decided to move the tree closer to the road so more people could decorate.
"People started to catch on and now the tree has about 50 ornaments on it," LaPierre said. "It really means something to many of these people."
The department has not decided yet if this will become a tradition, but said it will hang on to the ornaments after they take the tree down sometime in the new year.
