Fire, death of woman in Hamden being investigated as a homicide

The circumstances surrounding the death of a woman and a fire at a home on Lilac Avenue in Hamden early Saturday morning both remain under investigation by Hamden police and fire officials.

Around 1:30 a.m. Saturday firefighters were notified of a fire at a 28 Lilac Ave., crews were able to get the flames under control a short time later.

Officials said one person who has been identified as Jennifer Antonier of Hamden, was found dead on the second floor of the home after firefighters got the flames under control. However, the circumstances surrounding her death is still undetermined.

Sources have confirmed to Eyewitness News that Antonier's death is being investigated as a homicide. 

"It's sad, it's really sad. It's hear wrenching to know somebody lost their life," said Ulysses Casteel, a neighbor

Eyewitnesses described the terrifying moments that unfolded early that morning. 

"We saw the blazes and the fire, we saw the fire trucks all up and down the street. I mean the whole street was lit up like you wouldn't believe last night," Casteel said. 

Friends told Eyewitness News that Antonier lived alone with her dog.

Police have a portion of Lilac Avenue blocked off for hours Saturday while the State Police Major Crimes Unit investigated. 

"It's hard. It's very hard to see something like that on a day like today," Casteel said

Hamden Police said the cause and manner of Antonier's death has not been determined at this time and an autopsy is being preformed to assist in their investigation.
