WEST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

With impending sleet and freezing rain on the horizon for Tuesday, experts are warning drivers to make sure their vehicles are prepared.

Eyewitness News hit the road with AAA on Monday to get some last minute ideas.

The auto club said nearly a third of its year-end holiday service calls in the Greater Hartford area last year were for dead batteries.

Lenny Lu of West Hartford said that's exactly what prompted a phone call from him on Monday. He said his daughter's car was dead.

"She tried to get the car started this morning and it wouldn’t start," Lu said. "I don't have a cable, but I have a membership.”

AAA said dozens of tow trucks will be out in force as callers ask for emergency help, especially over the next 24 hours.

"A little bit of ice and snow can make it a little bit difficult," said Egardo Rivera, AAA fleet supervisor, Greater Hartford.

Rivera said a basic battery test is a vital first step to make sure a vehicle is in good shape.

He said drivers should also check tire pressure, the amount of tread and windshield wipers.

Rivera said drivers should replace them if they notice they are streaking.

"Sometimes the blades themselves are breaking or smudging," he said.

With the crash potential to increase during the busy morning commute, budgeting extra travel time is also a wise move, AAA said.

"We've been lucky this winter so far," Lu said. "So far we haven't gotten snow yet.”
