VERNON, CT (WFSB) -

Vernon police said scammers are calling homes, telling people they owe money on unpaid taxes.

Police said the caller pretends to work for the town, saying if you don’t pay immediately, you will be arrested or have your license revoked.

Jeanette Repsher said she got a phone call that raised her suspicion. She started asking questions and then the scammer hung up on her.

"I knew it was fraud right off the bat, because I knew I didn't owe any money,” Repsher said.

Officers said if you get the call, don’t pay anyone and hang up and call police right away.

The town said no town employees will ask for payment over the phone.
