Centers open to keep residents warm ahead of frigid temps

With the implementation of the severe cold weather protocol by Gov. Dannel Malloy, several communities opened warming centers for those seeking to get out of freezing temperatures. 

"Temperatures will plunge to -5 to -20 Saturday night. Wind chill readings will likely plummet to -15 to -30," Chief meteorologist Bruce DePrest said.

Sunday was expected to be no different.

Here's a list of the open centers:

Bloomfield

  • The Alvin & Beatrice Wood Human Services Center, 330 Park Ave., Thursday - Friday 9 a.m. - 9 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. - 3 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • Prosser Library, 1 Tunxis Ave., Wednesday - Thursday 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • McMahon Wintonbury Library, 1015 Blue Hills Ave., Wednesday, Friday, Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Thursday 1 p.m. - 8 p.m.
  • Blue Hills Fire Department, Thursday - Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

East Hartford

  • Public safety complex lobby, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • South End Senior Center, open during business hours. 

Ellington

  • Ellington Senior Center, 40 Maple St, Monday - Tuesday 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. (Closed Feb. 15), Tuesday - Wednesday 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m., Friday 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Saturday - Sunday closed.
  • Hall Memorial Library, 93 Main St., Monday - Thursday 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. (Closed Feb. 15, Friday - Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Sunday 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Hamden

  • Fire departments, 8:30 a.m. - 4:40 p.m.

Hartford

  • McKinney Shelter- Huyshope Avenue: 88 beds with 13 additional cots (provided by City of Hartford): 101 total. Open at 4:30 p.m.-- 7 a.m. Friday--Sunday
  • Immaculate Conception: Park Street: 75 beds with 75 additional cots (provided by City of Hartford): 150 total. Open at 4:30 p.m.--7 a.m. Friday--Sunday
  • Open Hearth: Sheldon Street: 25 beds total. Open at 4:30 p.m.-- 7 a.m. Friday--Sunday
  • Asylum Hill Congregational Church: 814 Asylum Ave.
  • Daytime availability-- Salvation Army Recreation Center, 100 Nelson St. (860) 543-8419 Friday: 8 a.m.-- 3 p.m., Saturday: 8 a.m.-- noon, Sunday 8 a.m.-- 3 p.m.

Simsbury

  • Simsbury Library, 725 Hopmeadow St., Friday - Saturday 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Sunday 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Eno Memorial Hall, 754 Hopmeadow St., Friday 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.

South Windsor

Waterbury

  • St. Vincent de Paul Society of Waterbury shelter,  114 Benedict St., 24 hours throughout the weekend 
  • St. Vincent de Paul Society Soup Kitchen, 327 Baldwin St.,  Saturday and Sunday until 1 p.m.
  • Silas Bronson Library, 267 Grand St., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.  
  • Higher Calling Ministry, 42 Bank St., second floor, open throughout the weekend.
  • Hospitality center, 693 East Main St.,  Saturday and Sunday from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., closing Monday morning.

West Haven

  • Basement conference room, Thursday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
