BERLIN, CT (WFSB) -

Crews have been working to restore power in Berlin after a tree came down on wires overnight.

They said the tree came down across Hudson Street sometime Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

They've been working to get power restored for several hours.

Hudson Street remained closed as of 6:30 a.m. while workers cleared the mess and made repairs.

They had to approach the scene carefully due to the live wires.

Neighbors told Eyewitness News that they woke up to having no power. They weren't alone. About 15 percent of the town was left in the dark.

One neighbor said he had to use the light from his watch to find his way around his house to look for a flashlight.

"It's amazing, it's also frightening just how powerful the wind must have been because it knocked over our trash cans that were full," said Lans Anderson, a neighbor.

Berlin schools were on a 2 hour delay.

Despite that, the closure of Hudson Street is projected to cause a traffic headache.

"There's two [schools], an elementary school and a junior high school just down the street," Anderson said. "So a very busy thoroughfare, and the high school is in the neighborhood as well."

Crews told Eyewitness News that they don't have a firm estimate on when the damage will be repaired and cleared. However, they said they planned to be out there for the better part of the morning.
