MANCHESTER, CT (WFSB) -

People in Manchester said they're lucky to be alive after a tree came crashing down into their apartment.

It happened on Oakland Street overnight in the wake of strong thunderstorms and 50 to 65 mph winds around 1 a.m. on Wednesday night.

As of the late morning hours, the tree was mostly chopped up.

Beforehand, residents described it as a nightmare.

"It sounded like the entire roof came off of the house," said Jennifer Welch of Manchester. "It was crazy, I had never heard anything so loud."

Eyewitness News was first on the scene and spoke exclusively with the residents inside.

They said the entire home shook before the tree came down. It ripped off the gutter, smashed windows and frightened the eight people inside. Branches sliced through the roof and narrowly missed people sleeping in upper floor bedrooms.

"With [multiple] families in the house, I didn't know if somebody was injured but everyone is fine," Welch said.

Many of the people inside were too shocked to speak. Luckily, no serious injuries were reported.

However, one man said he tried to remove the tree from the roof and a branch landed on his leg. He said he was ok.

Welch said she came home right before the whole thing happened.

"On the outside, the roof up here, the tree went right through the roof so we had a branch going inside the house, two of them and then also on the exterior of the house we had a branch went through, right between two windows," Welch said. "So it really could have been a lot worse."

Crews arrived around mid-morning to clean it up.

"We are lucky that we did not sustain much more damage than we did," said Steven Parker of Manchester.

As of 5 a.m., nearly 3,000 customers were without power in Manchester, which was about 10 percent of the city. As of 10:45 a.m, there were fewer than 400 outages reported.

Also in Manchester, Route 44 near the high school was closed because of a downed tree.
