Rain first and then wild temperature changes for Wednesday

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

March was off to a nice start on Tuesday, but that was expected to change overnight.

A winter weather advisory was issued for southern Massachusetts, but as of Tuesday evening it does not include parts of Connecticut.

Clouds increased as the night went on, and rain was moving into the state by about 10 p.m.

"Any mixed precipitation will quickly change to rain in the pre-dawn hours and the rain will become heavy at times," Chief Meteorologist Bruce DePrest said.

Temperatures will also rise Tuesday night into Wednesday, and will be in the 50s in many locations by Wednesday morning.

The storm will quickly pass through New England Wednesday and will be trailed by a cold front that will sweep into the state by late in the morning.

"That’s when the rain will come to an end," DePrest said, adding that rain is likely through part of the morning commute.

After a mild Wednesday morning, temps will drop into the 40s during the afternoon and the 20s and 30s for the evening.

"Plus, we’ll have to deal with a gusty northwesterly wind most of the day. Gusts to 40 mph or higher are quite possible," DePrest said.

The evening commute is expected to be dry with partly cloudy skies.

From there, cold air will continue to spread over the region from Wednesday night and into Thursday.

Thursday will be mostly sunny but breezy with highs ranging from 30 to 35 degrees.

There is a chance for snow over the weekend. Exactly how much remains to be seen.
