SOUTHINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

Police in Southington are warning residents to be on alert after a rash of car burglaries in town.

One vehicle was broken into Saturday evening in the parking lot of a Bob's Discount Furniture, according to police.

In a posting to social media, the owner said it happened between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The passenger side window was smashed and whoever did it rummaged through the belongings inside.

People in the area told Eyewitness News that they're being more vigilant and considering security systems.

"Several of us are getting security cameras and systems put in due to this because we do have an email network so we can all contact each other," said Suzanne Whitehead of Southington. "And we found out there were four more cars and a shed broken into."

"It's just going to happen no matter where you go, but I just think being aware and taking care of each others as neighbors, that's really going to help," said Donna DiCesare of Southington.

Police reminded residents to protect themselves by making sure their doors are locked and their valuables are out of sight.
