A man claiming to have been robbed on an Ansonia street on Tuesday night was shot several times, according to police.
The victim, whom police identified as 24-year-old Christian Balaj, told police just before he went into surgery that the incident happened in the North Cliff Street area around 10:20 p.m.
Police said they first responded to the State Street at North Cliff Street area for a report of shots fired.
They found Balaj on Rockwood Avenue and learned that he suffered from several gunshot wounds to the lower abdomen and leg areas.
He was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital. His condition was not released.
Before heading into surgery, Balaj allegedly told police that the shooting happened near the Armory Parking Lot on North Cliff Street.
Small caliber shell casings were found in that spot, police said.
Balaj told police that two men approached him and tried to rob him. After the suspects shot him, he said he drove to Rockwood Avenue to get help from a friend.
Police said the suspects fled in a small light-colored compact car.
No other information was available.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ansonia Police Department.
