A Wesleyan University professor claims that she was sexually harassed by a former dean and now, she’s suing the school for how it handled the investigation.
The complaint is about 50-pages long. The complaints lists how the alleged victim complained and was retaliated against.
According to a lawsuit obtained by Eyewitness News, Dr. Andrew Curran was the dean of arts and humanities at Wesleyan for more than five years. But one of his former mentees, who was also a Wesleyan professor, claimed he not only crossed the line, but when she spoke up, he retaliated against her.
The lawsuit claims starting in 2012, “Dean Curran made sexualized comments to the Plaintiff within professional conversations” about her body and physical appearance.
The victim claims the inappropriate comments escalated. She claims the former dean at one point told her “here was ‘lots of group sex’ and spouse swapping among Wesleyan Faculty.” Curran, according to the lawsuit, physically touched the victim in an unwelcoming way. The victim said in the lawsuit, she tried to talk with Curran about the unwanted advances, but instead she was retailed against.
At one point, she was transferred to another department and at another point, according to the suit, “Dean Curran withdrew his support for her New York Academy of Medicine Fellowship Application.”
On Friday night a university spokesperson issued a statement which said, “The University is aware of the action commenced by Professor Caldwell and the various claims made therein….Wesleyan believes that the lawsuit is without merit and it intends to defend itself vigorously.”
Eyewitness News did reach out to the victim’s attorney for comment, however she did not return the station’s calls.
