HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Hartford police are investigating after an SUV crashed into the front of the pizza shop in the city's Parkville section.

The vehicle was found wedged into the front of the New Park Pizza Shop located at 72 New Park Ave.

"I couldn't believe it. I walked in and I said is this my pizza shop," said New Park Pizza Shop owner Sener Sahin.

Police said the driver fell asleep on his way home from work and smashed into the building. He also backed into a light pole. The driver was not injured, but the building did suffer significant damage.

A tow truck removed the vehicle from the building.

The building owner said the pizza shop has been there for nearly 70 years. Sahin has owned it for the last five years. he said he is glad the restaurant was closed at the time of the crash.

"That would be horrible because during the operation hours, it's busy," Sahin said. He added that he will be closing the restaurant for a month to rebuild.

Police are trying to look at surveillance cameras from the area to help with the investigation.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the pizza shop rebuild. To make a donation, click here.
