MILFORD, CT (WFSB) -

State police said a rifle and a bulletproof vest were among items stolen from a marked cruiser overnight.

Troopers said the burglary happened along Rutland Road in Milford early Tuesday morning.

Thieves also hit Cornfield and Haystack Roads as well. The time frame was between 12 a.m. and 4:30 a.m.

The marked cruiser had a locked trunk, which police said was broken into. In that trunk was an AR-15 rifle and the vest.

"Its very concerning, we don't know who the suspects are or what they're capable of, but we're concerned for the worst, assuming whomever has this, needs to be considered armed and dangerous," said Milford Police Officer Michael DeVito.

State police called it standard operating procedure for a trooper to keep a rifle in the locked trunk. They said the trooper in this case lived in the area.

Troopers said other non-police vehicles were targeted as well. They said many of those vehicles were actually unlocked with valuables left in plain sight.

"We assume there's more than one party involved because of the amount of cars gone through," DeVito said.

"They probably came here because its a quiet area," said Carol Rennie, of Milford.

Rennie told Eyewitness News that her car was stolen right from her driveway.

"My daughter was walking out to go to work, came back in the house and asked me where my car was. I said in the driveway. We both walked out there and it was gone," she said.

But when she went to call the police, she quickly found out she wasn't alone.

"I went to call them, my daughter went around the corner, came back and said there were police everywhere," she said.

Rennie's car was one of 12 cars broken into.

Police said they are looking for a green 2015 Ford Fusion with Vermont plates displaying GHK-528.

Anyone with information about the break-ins is asked to contact state police by texting "TIP 711" to 236748 with the details.
