NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

This week, the Channel 3 Liberty Bank SurPRIZE Squad surprised a woman who continues to give back to others despite her own personal hardships.

Danielle Hamrick was the nominee.

Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven member Bridgette Russell is the one who tipped off the squad about her.

"She doesn't know anything about this," Russell said. "I don't know how she'll react. I'm sure she'll be quite surprised. She's the type of person that helps others even when she's been faced with challenges of her own."

Hamrick and her family became homeless after the property she was renting fell into foreclosure.

She also lost her job as a case worker after her client was placed into a nursing home.

But Russell said Hamrick was determined to get back on track.

"She's one of those people, she was out there taking any kind of program," Russell said.

With Russell's help, Hamrick was able to purchase a new home for her and her family.

She also started volunteering with the Community Action Agency in the Elm City. It ended up hiring her for part-time work.

The squad headed to Hamrick's work on a day it knew she would be there.

She said she was blown away to see the Liberty Bank SurPRIZE Squad. Like many recipients, she had to take a moment to take it all in.

"Bridgette is a really big part of my life," Hamrick said. "I can't believe this."

The squad presented Hamrick with a basket filled with gift cards she could use for things like groceries.

"Right now, I am in a tough position but I know that I'm going to come through it because I've come through worse," she told the squad.

Hamrick shared her story.

"Knowing I was homeless at one time, people don't really see that," she revealed. "I was working, but I was still homeless."

She said she knew her story would help others.

"They don't know that you can make it, but you can," Hamrick said. "You can. And I have been through a lot and Bridgette helped with that."

She said the squad made her day.
