Firefighters battled a large fire at the site of the former Del Rio Mexican restaurant early Wednesday morning.
According to officials, the fire was reported around 2:45 a.m. at 274 Riverside Dr.
Route 193 was closed at the intersection of Rt. 12 and the exit 98 off ramp from Interstate 395. However, it reopened around 7 a.m.
Eyewitness News obtained exclusive photos of the fire.
Crews from several surrounding towns, including East Putnam, Woodstock and Muddy Brook, were called for mutual aid. By the time they arrived, they said the building was engulfed in flames.
They said it took them 45 minutes to an hour to get the fire under control. By them all that was left of the building was a charred frame.
The fire was only part of the problem firefighters faced.
"In addition to that, we also had a power line that dropped into the scene which separated the two sides of the scene," said Chief Mike Rivers, West Thompson Independent Fire Association. "So the power was also a separate issue."
Crews were able to cut the line and avoid the threat.
No injuries were reported, but the building nearly burned to the ground, according to firefighters.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The state and local fire marshals are looking into it.
Firefighters said the building was supposed to be abandoned. The restaurant hasn't been open for some time.
