HARTFORD, CT (AP) -

The Hartford Police Union is criticizing the way department leadership reacted after a Donald Trump sticker was displayed inside a patrol vehicle.

The sticker that read "Trump: Make America Great Again" was placed on the cover of a department-issued laptop computer on the vehicle's dashboard and could clearly be seen through the windshield. A picture of the sticker circulated widely on social media last weekend.

Deputy Chief Brian Foley issued a statement that said the department was "embarrassed" and displaying the sticker showed "lack of professionalism and judgment."

Union President Sgt. Richard Holton acknowledged that the officer made a mistake but added that Foley's comments made the officer feel "belittled" and "vilified."

The officer's name was not released.

Foley says an investigation will determine whether department policy was violated.
