VERNON, CT (WFSB) -

A man was arrested for trying to rob a Vernon vet of pain medication with a video game controller on Wednesday.

Police said 32-year-old Jason Rivera of South Windsor entered the VCA Animal Hospital on Talcottville Road just after 1:30 p.m.

He wore all black clothing and a black ski mask. He also held an object that employees believed was a gun.

Police said Rivera demanded pain medication.

When employees told him they didn't have any, he fled in the direction of Pleasantview Drive.

An alert driver saw Rivera in his black clothing running through yards and reported what she saw to police as she followed him in her vehicle.

Rivera then fled into the woods and ran north along the Hockanum River.

Police said they set up a perimeter to contain him.

An officer eventually found him hiding in a field about a half a mile from the animal hospital.

Rivera was arrested without further incident.

A K9 unit recovered Rivera's discarded shirt and ski mask in the woods.

Investigators said he wasn't armed with a handgun, but with a Nintendo Wii remote controller that he hid up one of the sleeves of his sweatshirt.

He was charged with first-degree robbery, criminal attempt to possess narcotics and interfering with police.

Police said they are holding him in lieu of bond. An arraignment was scheduled for 10 a.m in Rockville Superior Court.
