GROTON, CT (WFSB) -

The U.S. Navy posted video to social media on Friday showing the USS Hartford breaking through the surface of ice near the Arctic Circle earlier in the month during an Ice Exercise.

The crew, which is assigned to the Arctic Submarine Lab, is then seen emerging from the sail of the submarine to clear the ice off.

Crew members then use several tools to help clear thick ice over a second hatch opening on the vessel.

The Ice Exercise is a five-week expedition for research, testing and evaluating operational capabilities in the region.

The USS Hartford is based out of Groton and named for the Nutmeg State's capitol city.
