MIDDLETOWN, CT (WFSB) -

Trained dogs were brought into an elementary school in Middletown over the weekend after a recent bed bug situation.

Last week, a nurse found two bed bugs on a child. On Wednesday, a parent found a bed bug in their child's backpack at home.

The dogs identified four areas in the Farm Hill Elementary School that had positive hits with bed bug activity.

  • A shelf of books in Room 203
  • A couple of K cubbies in Room 1
  • A crate of cloth sacks in Room 215
  • Two library shelves

Superintendent Patricia Charles sent an email to parents on Saturday.

Charles wrote all identified items have been removed from the building. She added a bed bug heater is “being used to treat removable objects.” The high heat will be used to “ensure all bedbugs and eggs are killed.”

Charles said they were able to determine that the bed bugs from the first incident came from the child's home. No other bed bugs were found at the school and as a precaution, the school was sprayed last weekend.
