GREENWICH, CT (WFSB) -

Police are searching the man who assaulted a taxi driver in the Byram section of Greenwich on Monday night.

An unidentified driver for RC Taxi was called for a pickup on Morgan Avenue around 4:30 a.m. The driver was “flagged down near the pickup location” by a man, who asked to be taken to Port Chester, NY.

When taxi started moving, police said the suspect “suddenly grabbed the driver and started punching him” while demanding money.

During the struggle, the driver lost control of the vehicle and rolled along slowly down the road. The taxi crashed into a tree.

The driver was able to escape while the suspects “remained locked in the back seat,” police said.

Police said the driver got to a nearby home where the resident was able to call 911.

The suspect was able to get out of the taxi and fled the scene on foot.

The taxi driver suffered “minor cuts, abrasions, and bruising to his head,” police said.

Police said the suspect “spoke without a discernible accent” and had a scruffy beard. He was between 5'5" to 5'7" and was wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt.
