BLOOMFIELD, CT (WFSB) -

After an Eyewitness News report aired about an animal shelter in Bloomfield nearing capacity, the shelter said it's now pursuing adopters and rescue groups.

The Hartford Animal Shelter in Bloomfield said it has been dealing with the possibility of putting some dogs down after a handful were dumped by their previous owners.

The shelter said to avoid that, the dogs needed to be adopted as soon as possible.

Since the story was viewed on Eyewitness News, several potential adopters and rescue groups came forward to potentially help.

"Unfortunately, we are expecting more dogs into the shelter [Wednesday], but we have appointments set up [Thursday]," the shelter said. "We will keep you posted!"

A week ago, the shelter said it only had four dogs.

In less than two days, 12 strays were brought into it.

With more dogs on the way, the shelter said it was two cages away from being full.

The space is rented out, so the shelter has a limited on how long it can keep dogs. Once it has advertised that a dog is available, it has less than two weeks to find an owner.

It has 22 dogs to get out in 10 days.
