ROCKY HILL, CT (WFSB) -

A Portland man made a lucky find that lead to thousands of dollars.

Robert Unikewicz often plays the Connecticut Lottery.

“I don’t check my tickets very often. Every once in a while, when I have the chance, I go through them,” Unikewicz said in a release on Wednesday.

This week, while checking Quick Pick tickets, he made a discovery worth $50,000. He had a winning ticket that matched four numbers plus the Powerball number.

The lucky find comes more than three months after the Dec. 5 drawing.

“I was really surprised. I hardly ever win anything. Now, I can get caught up on some bills, give some money to my two daughters, take a vacation, and put some money away,” Unikewicz said.

The win by Unikewicz was a chance for Connecticut Lottery officials to remind players to check their tickets.

“Since all draw game tickets expire 180 calendar days from the draw date, players are encouraged to check their tickets carefully—sooner rather than later,"  Connecticut Lottery said in a release on Wednesday.
