A 13-term first selectman in Deep River passed away over the weekend.
Town officials said First Selectman Richard Smith died at the age of 65.
They described Smith as an outgoing leader who was known to take on snow plowing tasks and pitch in around the community.
Rep. Joe Courtney released a statement on Smith's passing.
"Dick was a friend whose support I will always remember and treasure, and he should live on as an example of a citizen-public servant to all who hold elected office," Courtney said.
A candle light vigil is set for Monday night at Town Hall at 7:30 p.m.
A wake is planned for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, also at Town Hall, with funeral services set for Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Chester.
