Police responded to Walmart in Hartford on Monday evening after a man was shot in the abdomen.
The shooting happened at the Walmart located on Flatbush Avenue after 6 p.m.
Police said a drug deal lead to the shooting.
One man was allegedly trying to buy marijuana from another, but after a dispute, both men pulled out weapons and fired.
The victim is a 34-year-old man from New Britain who was shot three times, suffering life-threatening injuries. On Monday night, he was in critical condition.
Investigators found shell casings, one pound of marijuana, and a pickup truck that was owned by the victim.
A few hours later, police said the shooter turned himself in.
The suspect is a 26-year-old man from Windsor, who admitted that he fired a handgun but said it was in self defense and that the victim was trying to rob him.
Police said the suspect handed over his weapon along with a shot gun he claims the other man pulled on him. Police said the shooter has a legal pistol permit for the weapon he used.
The suspect is expected to face drug and assault charges.
