In a move that appears to agree with public sentiment, New Hartford's Board of Education opted to fund an elementary school it previously decided to close.

According to parents, the board voted 6 to 1 in favor of putting money back into the Bakerville Consolidated School for the 2016-2017 school year.

The budget, however, must pass a referendum vote.

If that happens, the board said it will rescind its vote to close the school.

A group that supports keeping the school open said it's now working to rally the town behind the new budget.

The board originally voted in December to close the school because of declining enrollment, building safety concerns and money savings.

Despite the results of a previous and recent referendum where residents elected to keep the school open, the board maintained that the school would close.

This week, however, it appears the board changed its mind.
