Route 85 in Waterford was closed for a brief period of time on Wednesday afternoon after a suspicious item was spotted on the side of the road.
State police said the closure on Route 85 happened after a passerby reported seeing "a possible pipe bomb" on the side of the road at around 1:30 p.m.
A metal cylindrical pipe, which was capped at both ends, was on Route 85 in the area of the Waterford Speedbowl/Harvey Industries, police said.
The Connecticut State Police Emergency Services Unit was called to the scene where the metal cylindrical pipe was "secured," police said.
"Upon examination it was determined it was not a pipe bomb, no type of explosive was located," police said on its Facebook page.
There were no reported injuries and no threat to the public, police said.
"A green leafy substance, possibly marijuana, was located inside," police said.
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to call the Waterford Police Department at 860 442-9451.
Police said as a precaution, they closed Route 85 to all traffic. The road reopened just before 3 p.m.
