BRANFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A Branford man was arrested after police said he assaulted officers and a police K9 at a motel on Saturday evening.

Officers were called to a report of a “violent domestic dispute with his girlfriend” at the Branford Motel, which located at 470 East Main St., around 9 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers located 48-year-old Louis Ortiz on the second floor balcony of the Branford Motel.

Officers were trying to Ortiz into custody when police said he “became combative and non-compliant with officers commands.”

Police said at this time, Ortiz “lunged at K9 Joker.” As worked to arrest Ortiz, police said he “tried to choke the K9 and continually fought with the officers.”

Two officers and K9 Joker were injured during the fight, police said.

The officers were treated at an area medical facility and released with “minor injuries.”

K9 Joker, however, did not require any medical attention.

Police said Ortiz was treated and released from a medical facility.

Ortiz was charged with breach of peace, third-degree assault, interfering with officer, cruelty to animals, and assault on officer as well as two counts of threatening.

Ortiz is being held on a $10,000 bond. He was arraigned in New Haven Superior Court on Monday morning.
