HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A victory parade and rally were held on Sunday afternoon to honor the University of Connecticut Women’s Basketball Team, who were 2016 national champions.

The women's basketball team won their fourth consecutive title and 11th overall last week. The Huskies defeated Syracuse 82-51 in the NCAA national championship game on Tuesday night.

“The fact that we made history that a connection that can never be broken,” UConn Senior Breanna Stewart said.

The parade kicked off at 1 p.m. The parade route was as follows:

  • Begin at the State Capitol building on the corner of Trinity Street and Elm Street
  • Proceeds north on Trinity Street through the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Arch
  • Turns right (east) onto Jewell Street
  • Turns left (north) onto Trumbull Street
  • Ends at the intersection of Asylum Street and Trumbull Street, just steps away from where the rally will be held in front of the main entrance of the XL Center.

There was a victory rally outside of the XL Center.

"Once a Husky, always a Husky," Stewart said.

Besides Stewart, UConn Associate Head Coach Chris Dailey spoke along with players Moriah Jefferson and Morgan Tuck along with Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal and Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin.

However, UConn Huskies Coach Geno Auriemma was unable to attend the rally because he was not feeling well.

Malloy announced on Thursday that the victory parade and rally will be financed by private donations as well as business sponsorships and "no state or city funding is used."

The Hartford Business Improvement District in association with the City of Hartford and the State of Connecticut along with other agencies will produce the weekend events.
