WEST HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

A New York man was arrested Thursday after police said he was found with child pornography at a West Haven church.

Thomas Sawyer, 73, of Valatie, NY, was arrested for having more than 400 images of naked young boys, some performing sexual acts.

Sawyer's arrest came after a lengthy investigation.

The investigation began when Sawyer was residing at Saint John Vianney Church in West Haven. Sawyer is currently a Brother with the Holy Cross Brotherhood in East Setauket, NY.

Police were called to Saint John Vianney Church after another Brother allegedly saw the images on a computer.

"One brother saw something that was alarming, contacted police, police investigated, executed search and seizure warrants and found child pornography on a computer owned and being used by one of the other brothers," said West Haven Police Sgt. David Tammaro.

Five days later, when West Haven police showed up at the rectory with a search warrant, they said Sawyer was on the computer.

During an interview at the police station, Sawyer allegedly said he "enjoyed looking at photos and videos of prepubescent young boys. Sawyer claimed he had only viewed photos and pictures for his own enjoyment and only downloaded the pictures he found online, never sharing or uploading the pictures to anyone else," police documents said.

One of the two computers in the guest bedroom was owned by Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, where Sawyer worked as their information and technology supervisor.

Eyewitness News was told Sawyer resigned early last summer and was living in upstate New York at a home for other retired Holy Cross brothers when he was arrested.

Sawyer was charged with possession of first-degree child pornography.

He posted a $25,000 bond and is due back in court next month.
