Fans of lighthouses made the Cross Sound Ferry Lighthouse cruises so popular in its inaugural run last year that they’ve expanded.
Several families were making memories on Thursday aboard the Cross Sound Ferry’s high speed boat as she ventured out of New London harbor and into Long Island Sound for an expanded tour of the Lighthouse Cruises.
Last year’s “Classic Cruise” was so popular they quickly sold out. This year, the ferry added a second cruise called the “Lights and Sights Cruise,” visiting lighthouses east of Groton, into Rhode Island.
“I think it's a fundamental trip for families. I think there's a lot to see, it's a beautiful boat,” said Annie Stow, of Massachusetts.
"We were right around 8,000 passengers last year, which was far beyond our expectations going into the season. With the number of trips tripling this year we're expecting a lot more,” said Stan Mickus, of Cross Sound Ferry.
Tourism is the primary industry in southeast Connecticut, and the cruises fit right in.
"This is the type of thing that makes Connecticut so unique having an attraction like this it bridges so much of maritime history as well as the real interest in lighthouses,” said Ed Dombroskas of Mystic Country Tours.
On the tours you can see lighthouses in Connecticut, New York and Rhode Island.
