WEST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A convicted felon with a violent past accused of kidnapping of his ex-girlfriend was extradited from New Jersey and appeared in court in Connecticut on Friday.

Police said 46-year-old John Robinson alleged kidnapped his girlfriend at her home on Woodlawn Street in West Hartford on April 12.

Police said after the alleged kidnapping, the unidentified ex-girlfriend was able to get away from Robinson at a rest stop on Interstate 95 in Milford. She got help from a store clerk at the rest stop when he stopped to get gas.

The victim had an active restraining order against Robinson that had just been issued on April 5.

On April 13, Robinson surrendered to police in New Jersey. He has been extradited from Newark, NJ

During Robinson's arraignment in Hartford Superior Court on Friday, the state made its case to increase his bond.

"I think only because of the victim's quick thinking and efforts to protect herself that she was able to not receive more serious injuries than he did," Cathryn Krinitsky, who is the senior assistant state's attorney, said.

But, Robinson's public defender was quick to put some of the blame on the victim.

"My defense hackles were raised when I noticed in paragraph 11 that the police had to go back and confront the victim with extra information and she said oh yeah he went inside to retrieve my bag...if she had been quick thinking she could have have then fled the situation and this whole thing would have been avoided," said Karen Lydecker, who is Robinson's public defender.

Robinson faces several charges including, kidnapping, criminal violation of a restraining order, strangulation and assault. He could face more charges when he appears in court on Friday.

Robinson is being held on $450,000 bond. He is back in court on May 10.
