SOUTHINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

An elementary school in Southington was on lockdown for a brief period of time because "an unauthorized individual was observed on school grounds" on Wednesday morning, the superintendent said.

Thalberg Elementary School, which is located at 145 Dunham Rd., placed in “secure school” mode as a precaution around 10:45 a.m., Superintendent of Schools Tim Connellan said.

Connellan said the "unauthorized individual" did not appear to present a danger to students, but the incident was investigation by Southington Police Department.

Police said the "unauthorized individual" was "determined to be a special needs individual, who lives in a neighborhood of the school and entered the school property."

Police said they took the individual home without incident.

Connellan sent an email to parents about the incident. He asked parents to not call or go to the school during the incident.

The lockdown was lifted around 11:45 a.m.

There was no threat made to the school and  "nothing of a criminal nature was found to have taken place," police said.

Police said no further action will be taken by investigators.
