EAST LYME, CT (WFSB) -

Thousands attended a memorial ceremony Saturday night for a 9 year-old East Lyme girl, who lost her battle with cancer earlier this month.

Madeline Guarraia passed away on April 6 after a five year battle with cancer.

Through the difficulty of the loss, Madeline's mother Amie Guarraia, wanted her loved ones to remember how much joy Maddie gave everyone around her.

"It was really touching and we know she would have loved it, so we kind of felt like we were throwing her a big party tonight," said Guarraia.

Guarraia became well known in her community after the town of East Lyme held a holiday tree lighting last year so she could celebrate Christmas early.

Guarraia was also a honorary Waterford police officer.
